Every Day
For years the train
Came from London Town
Stopping every mile or so,
On up line and on down.

The clattering coaches
Crossing noisily the points,
Then gathering speed.
Sing steady over joints.

Semaphore of red and yellow,
As fingers pointing wide,
Soon gave way to shining light
That gantry cannot hide.

As travellers grew in number
Two decks were much too slow,
so longer stretched the carriages
And platforms had to grow.

Now the space between each stop
Gives no time to load,
And ticket office has to move
Half mile along the road.

Well Hall Eltham. and Eltham Park,
Are names in history placed.
Keep these titles, magnificent.
Not halls of fame disgraced.
