You
Every Day
At first a struggle every day
The stiffness raw and real,
Each pounding stride a jolting stretch
Through thumping numbness steal.

But soon time left to watch the scene,
Soft at first the sinews sing,
And tightening muscle becomes in tune,
Now hollow cheeks are glowing.

sleeping tight at night, like tick,
From daily giles of training,
Eating road inexorably
In sunshine and in raining.

Nike, goddess of all fleet feet,
Lifts both heart and soul.
All these months now dedicate
To single minded goal.

But, not alone in this great mass
of kindred human athletes,
For each the other help gives out
To spur to greater feats.

Winning great, but coming home.
Against fatigue and deadening mind,
Taps the very depths of strength
That lives in champion kind.
