25th January 1991House of Commons Press Release Although Peter had been writing poetry about the environment, about philosophy, about history, about almost anything you would consider, this was the first time that he had had national recognition. |
On Friday 25th January (1991), Peter Bottomley MP was interviewed by Michael Charlton on LBC about the need to save the environment
and to avoid needless destruction. Peter Bottomley said neither roads nor railways should be built unnecessarilly. We could save a lot of trouble if more of us were able to organise our work or our homes so that there was a shorter distance between the two. Peter Bottomley quoted many lines by Eltham Poet, Peter Middleton. The MP said "I am appointing Peter Middleton as my official poet. He has written lines not only on the Woolwich Free Ferry but also on Oxleas Woods and other areas of local importance. Mr Middleton may not become Oxford Professor of Poetry in the same way that I might not become Prime Minister but I hope that both our contributions help to make Eltham a more cheerful and better place". |
