Every Day
On summer days after working hard
To rest in shade of garden
With eyes soft shut and in canvas chair,
And occasional snore. beg pardon.

Roused by ringing electric bell,
And instant laughing voices.
Multitudes of merry makers
Spill forth for playtime choices.

A tidal wave of happy faces,
Bright red cheeks and rounded lips.
Calling silent in the hub-bub,
Raised tall on straining toe tips.

The shouts and screams of full tilt games,
Of bouncing ball on wall,
The running, shouting feet in pursuit,
And deeper note of guardians call.

All too soon this interlude over
At whistle blast long and shrill,
Now to rest in deep, still silence,
After the answering starlings trill.
