Light Of My Life
Darling
Mum came up to see us
As often as she could,
She brought us sweets, and books. and cuddles.
I always knew she would.

Wartime and a long weekend,
Laughter, and kisses, and toast,
Foreigners in Yorkshire,
Evacuees the host.

After tea on Sunday
Steam train ride to make
Connection to siren sound London,
Where civilians and soldiers quake.

This choo choo train with motley tail
Of third class, goods, and Pullman,
Has corridor coach with Edwardian loo.
Makes this schoolboy a fan.

But as we slow down for Wakefield Junction,
The platform a sea of khaki,
I pull the chain, wash my hands,
The door is jammed to me.

I shout and scream. kick and pull,
Until the red faced guard appears.
And when at last I step to freedom
A Regiment of cheers.
