Right Marker on the spot,
Nervous and all alone,
Pins and needles in his toes
And ache in every bone,
When, drifting on the morning air,
Thumping drum and bright trombone.

"Here they come, look alive,"
Eyes swivel to watch the swaying rank,
The crunching feet, and booming beat,
Curve into view, so full of swank,

Lovely, lovely! Eyes switching fast
in shade of underside green peak,
Closer now and crisp smart step
Pounds the square to make it squeak.

Movement all around as orders mouthed,
And staccato notes are played,
Knee and foot raised right angle,
A perfect ballet made.

Occasional call to "Stand Attention"
As talking, walking group floats by,
But Colonel Bogie and Summertime
Make dull slow time fast fly.

Soon, "Advance in Open Order,"
And "General Salute" are past,
And marching men and swinging band
Are faded from landscape vast.

Right Marker on the spot,
Alone, with tear in eye,
The glorious marvellous music
Now heard as soft sad sigh.
