Travelling warm and safe
Inside Miss Ellie,
Secured in armchair by elastic recoil webbing,
And glued to glistening ashphalt by Goodyear Super "S",
Splashing through mirror pools
To staccato sound of rising flood,
With Trico blades beating out Rock and Roll,
Came sudden the Thirty sign
Where before the sinking clouds
And climbing road
Were like some demonic scenic railway ride.
Wide enough to exercise a Battalion,
Stately,
Square-set,
solid city,
With nothing north but angry looking sea.

Left behind,
Now soon twist and turn,
Curve and climb,
in wilderness of wind and rain
Another square,
Set with flashing beacon tower
Calling out a warning to unseen craft below.

The drenching drops left us sightless
And trapped inside our Champagne drawing room,
And drove us, in some haste,
To the very last place on Earth
Where kindly Spirit relented,
Relaxed the overcast and falling cumulus,
And strip of land appeared!

Then dark, as dramatic Shakespeare play,
Dark clouds draw as curtains across this stage,
And Orkney was gone!
