Enchantment
Yeah Yeah
My quickening step,
But oh, so quiet,
Never fails to raise the bark,
Even though the rain is stair rods
In Winters icy dark.

Silent though the letter flap raises
To receive the envelope of love,
Undisturbed the spiders slumber
As missive floats on wings of dove
To plop on bristle matted carpet,
At feet of silent sentinel dog,
Whose sudden voice raises Cain and Able,
Brings to life each sleeping log.

And on the shadowy return path
Where gate is resting open on latch,
A ghost like figure, hunting waits
With outstretched claw, a leg to catch.

Pursed lips squeak,
And hand, laid low
Connects with tail upstretched,
As hunter, tall on curving toe,
Begs, with nerves unflexed.

A smoothing stroke,
A smoothing motion,
This still time
As canine commotion
Dies a death behind dead door.

Step out straight,
Return the gate,
To leave this scene
Still and serene,
To come to life more naturally
With mysterious message
Expectant on floor.
