Mum was a widow
From the Second World War,
Her measly little pension
Kept us very poor,
No new clothes for us,
No blazer at Red Lion Lane,
Lots of wagging fingers
When I tried hard to explain.

And how I hated dinner time
When five pence was the rate,
With six steps down to Free Meals,
And six queues at the gate.

Where the last to eat,
Whatever our age,
Were Free School Meals.
How it made me rage!

So,
When I got my paper round
I saved hard for my "magic" bike,
Gave Mum a few shillings to help her out,
Was allowed to spend some "how you like".

I went, when I could,
To the First Class queue,
But when I was poor
How I cursed you
For killing my Dad,
Making Mum cry,
Making me a Rebel
Till the day I die!
