Retired
You would never in a million years,
Dream,
That this Green Space
Was once the Front Line of Defence,
The Last Line of Freedom,
Where the awe full scream
Of Messerschmitts diving,
The rattle of machine guns firing
The brain-stunning sound of bombs exploding,
The blood of Dead and Dying corroding,
Actually happened.

In History Books this IS the place
Where tangled remains
Of Spitfires and Hurricanes,
Where craters in the runway line,
Where Black Pirate One-O-Nine
Strafes the Gound Crew
Intent on smoothing this chalky upland,
For the returning "Few"

This Quiet Place
Where sirens wail,
And ragged Aircraft sail,
Where vapour trail zig zags The Blue.
Where Heroes did not fail.
Where this Sceptre'd Isle
Was saved,
For me and you!
