My Love
Our grey feline,
With orange breaking through,
Green pools for eyes
That fill with burning coal
At creak of floor,
Or knock at door.

This sentry cat of ours,
If she could only bark
No burglar would be safe
In daylight or in dark.

Mighty muscled marvel
With rudder so over grown,
Rolls over and dies for me
When love from my lips is blown.

That rumble in her throat and chest
Belie her swinging tail,
And even though her claws are flexed
Her gentle bite would fail
To break a brown and crispy leaf
Caught up in a winters gale.

But even so, her tiny frame
Becomes a steel spring tempered
If hands of mine restrict her space
And her freedom could be hampered.

She climbs upon my shoulders wide
And worries my open palm,
I gently stretch her back turned tail,
soon we both are warm and calm.
