My Love
My first hat Was a genuine. half scale,
Real tricky. grey in colour,
The came to me one Christmas
Via Gamages

Hitlers greed sent me to "Red Roofs''
A kind of home for orphans,
Unhappy time aged six.
sirens. no new or frightening taxing,

And practice sound one midnight
brought me from sleeping dream
Of mother holding close.
Thinking this was breakfast,
Made up comforting bed into folded pile of woven wool
And cleaning teeth before my food,
Brought forth a snapping tongue
And black mark in book.

Innocent child I spoke to broad bosomed,
Warm hearted lady as I yawned in class.
And suddenly, like knight from fairy tale
Told around the glowing fire,
Dad was there in wardens office
To claim my presence.

The telling book produced
How I was late to gain my place
In shelter deep underground,
And how I never shared my toys
Rescued from inferno London.

My pill box,
Size the same as gas mask case,
But opened. proudly set
In soft black cord.
The one and only,
Size three and one half,
Now confiscated and for communal use,
Battered at the bottom of large wooden crate.
Lost to me for ever.
