Thirty Days ...
Starting from slumber one dark cold fall,
Silencing soon the shrill early call,
My mind leaving Morpheus, back to life,
To a quiet as deep as a ten foot wall.

The silence is deafening as wary feet take
My goose pimpled body, now wide awake,
To ice covered window and swish back drape,
To find winters icing of the cake.

Snow, velvet snow, soft and deep.
Blanketing all in one wide heap,
The roads, homes and hedgerows,
And corn we'll not reap.

The birds are all silenced, and animal track
Go tentative forward and everback
To lost place of hiding and warmth,
And hope that food will never lack.

The sun rose low, and pale in hue,
Its rays hardly reached the starving ewe,
Nature had painted a great masterpiece,
But the sheep hardly noticed as the death toll grew.
