Before such Men
As Flamsteed, Maskelyne and Halley,
Did the Stars
Mark the Night Sky,
And did the Sun dally
On Mid Summers Day
Where the view, bright or grey.
Stayed longer
For some reason yet unexplained?

Before such men
As Drake, Nelson and Chichester
Wandered far from home,
Before we realised the Heavens were a dome,
That this Earth a giant fruit ripe for picking,
Was Greenwich ever here
Next to this astonishing River,
And stood astride this Black-Line slither,
This Town a Telescope,
A Timepiece,
A Space Capsule,
A Spot so minuscule
As to be invisible
In the minds of ordinary men?

Perhaps this Place ever marked on the Map of
Time,
Waiting only for the Renaissance Chime
To shine its searchlight of Understanding.
