Mile on mile of convoy,
That's how I remember Rochester Way,
And how we waited patiently
To cross for work and play.

Hours we waited.
And to pass the time
We counted lorries in their thousands,
And bren-gun carriers rattling by
Carrying grim faced Tarzans.

We were silent,
Knew nothing of this D Day plan.
But this had never happened before,
This continuous line of machine and man.

We were dumbstruck,
Just kids off to school.
Sometimes we waved a feeble hand
Then felt silly as a fool,
For this was awesome, frightening,
This hour, this day, this week,
As still the bombs and rockets fell.
And fluttering Union Jacks,
And Stars and Stripes,
And the Western Allies white painted sign.
Changed little our living hell.

Many men died in foreign fields,
And we at home had funerals too.
Battered houses food rationing,
And sleepless nights, a few.

But these Landings not a joyous time,
Relief, where Peace in sight.
Ought we not mark this Day
With multitudes of Quiet Might,
Joining together in Gentle Praise,
Though still aware of others plight?
