Hear This
Finally
Looking through this archway,
The distant sea, blue
And specked with black white gulls,
Fills the screen complete,
No sign of hyperbolic horizon,
Nor hint of world beyond this frame,
No Nasca desert,
No Giants in the South Sea Ocean,
No Great Wall,
No smiling Sphinx magic potion.

But, peering landwards through the eye piece
Of this Camera,
An ever widening view
Of ice thrusts from the North and West,
Mind overwhelmed in its quest.

Did Merlin fly these Sacred Stones,
Did temperature change
By chance build these flattened curves,
Or did Man, moved by some mysterious force,
Struggle in the freezing night,
Place these Monsters on their course?

This perfect eyepiece mutely projects
The images of Horse and Hill,
Of circles, lines, and standing still,
The lonely Stones,
Kings without a Kingdom,
Placed without a reason,
Yet reasonably placed
To bleach the answer on Polaris plate,
To share this Earth
Perfectly spaced.
