Years ago at hand cranked pump
Where glass filled twice for just four shillings,
There waved one flag with company name,
No need for gaudy billings.

The willing man with streaky cloth
Would check the water and oil,
And if the tyres looked underdone
Would smile at happy toil.

Windscreen too would feel his strength,
A labour of love to clean,
And soft cloth gently laid on paint
To protect from overalls lean.

No need to walk the mile to till
Or grumble over change,
The happy face made motoring fun,
Now attendants act so strange.

Without the driver calling
For five or ten of juice
All would soon be on their bikes,
Watching ends so loose.

Is petrol for the purchaser
To pay and then receive,
Any salesman to do his bidding
And cars emptiness relieve?

To do it as a service,
To smile, and not castigate
The busy, thoughtfull, driver,
On an errand, and getting late?

CLIFFORDS.
WELL HALL.
