The blackbird stared at me
And I, advancing, slowed.
He hopped towards me glaring
His unblinking eye glowed.
Hesitating, with one foot raised,
I felt my life in peril.
Stopped, and stared back at this lion bird.
He, sensing win, proceeded forward
And with measured care struck down.
Then I saw,
Not a ragged piece of string,
But caught out cold
In strange,
Unfriendly
Open ground,
Worm.

The golden beak
Stabbed
And severed
The struggling, squirming, worm.

I stook stock still as worm
Hung, was drawn and quartered in a trice,
And slithered out of sight
Inside the sleek and shiny bird.

The worm was gone.
And blackbird soon was gliding, sliding, over hedgerow,
Now my rooted feet took flight,
Hurrying on.
Worm,
blackbird,
me,
All gone!
