My Dad was fast asleep
The last time I saw him,
No snoring in his satin box
In shade of curtained window dim.

He looked quite strange asleep,
His face a pinched thin look,
And hands, not under cover warm,
Fingers entwined on small black book.

It really was my Dad,
All those white faced strangers said,
But fast asleep in our small parlour,
Not upstairs in the front room bed.

When sombre friends and relatives
Had collected in the kitchen,
I climbed a chair beside the trestle,
Took a deep breath, then peeked in.

Was that my Dad fast asleep?
Even now I have my doubt
When I see a sleeping soul
With no-colour lips that pout.
