When the doodlebug went bang
And all the world was dark,
When the dust and sound had settled,
And silent dogs, frightened, bark,
When streaming light invades the tomb,
When panic rush for blue sky room,
When breath explodes in shrieking scream,
We emerged, cement streaked grey,
To shattered world on summers day.

Saturday lunchtime, Wimbledon treat,
Of strawberries luscious, and double whipped cream,
Left uneaten at ram jet roar
Now crushed beneath a splintered beam.
Upstairs curtains, still on coiled wire,
Flutter on this flameless pyre,
Family heirlooms broadcast Birdbrook,
And gardens gooseberries, ready to eat,
Are broken, bleeding, at my feet.

Soldiers and the Civil Defence
Clear debried road, infill the crater,
Children, quiet, as adults stand tense,
Watch wounded, found, and bodies, later.

When sunshine rays begin to fade
And empty stomachs protest,
The homeless wind their weary way
To Briset school for food, and rest.
