I miss the sound of clattering trams
From the Welcome Inn at night,
The whirring of the wire wound motor
That hugs the tracks so tight.

I heard them climbing up the slope
From Woolwich by ihe stream,
And then at Shooters Hill cross roads
Controlled descent a dream.

The dead mans handle, held with love
In metal smoothed hand, worn grey
By miles of governing progress slick,
In shifts, both night and day.

The chattering of the cow catcher
On cobbles made of wood.
And brakes, assisted by bags of sand,
Overcome the weathers mood.

The banging of the reversing seats
As terminus draws near,
And clanging bell, at drivers foot,
That schoolboys dare to hear.

The comfort that the singing track
Gave to travellers late in dark,
Never lonely waiting there
Though streets were traffic stark.

They came, perhaps not even spaced,
Sometimes in three or four,
But always, even in the darkest times,
Always, theres still one more.
