A Penny For Them
My Old Dutch
Hush
I joined the Legion To see the world,
To march ahead of conquering column,
Bayonet shining and flag unfurled.

I became a soldier
In search of hope and glory..
Perhaps one day my name appear
As hero of valour story.

I trudged the burning deserts,
And romped the peat covered hills,
Ploughed through mud, crushed the corn,
shrugged off the snow that chills.

I survived all these scenes .
Where air was rent with shrieking metal,
And in the end I gave my name
To death dealing microbe in a kettle
I joined the Legion
In one way to forget,
How I wish this dreadfull life
Would receive me of this debt.
