It's.......!
We lived for a time in Kidbrooke,
Ridgebrook Terrace, Number Eight,
And some Sundays we went to Grandads
Trying never to be late.

We phoned from the box in Rochester Way,
Left, home at eleven precise,
Strode out along Briset Road,
And always exclaimed "How nice",
The Poplar Trees
And the Tallest Bridge
With its bullet holes,
And the drainage stream
With its frogs, and shoals
Of sticklebacks,
At the crossing of Westhorne Avenue.

Then through the Foxhole Tunnel, anew,
To winding path and allotments neat,
And the crunching dust beneath our feet
Of Morses coal yard,
In Victorian Sherard.

Soon 'Buses, red,
Dying to take us out for the day,
Breathless, and quickening step,
One sixpenny piece ready to pay,
Petts Wood, all the way.

And because we'd been good,
When we came back by nine
A glass of lemon, and a Wall's ice cream,
In the old wooden shack
By the Railway Line.

Sherard Road,
1945 ....
