It's.......!
Who has been to Eltham
And walked along Green Lane,
Who has leaned against the wall
And waited for a train?

Who has spied the lightning flash,
And seen the swaying shape,
Who has measured the closing speed
Without the use of tape?

Who has waved, and jumped with joy,
Who once again became a boy,
Who once vowed he'd drive a train,
Who might perhaps try again
When he's learned to steer a'bus,
Directed traffic with no fuss,
Become a doctor, or history teacher,
An arborist, or renowned preacher.

So, eventually this long straight line,
Where infinity stops at Mottingham,
Will all be mine.
Each click and clack, each inch of track,
Each concrete sleeper, with me its keeper.

And me down here, with Dead Mans Handle
My rear red light a flickering candle,
My face a smile to see you wave,
My mind in awe at your thoughts so brave.

Who has been to Eltham
And walked along Green Lane,
Who has looked along the line
And waited for a train?
