Without You
Untouchables
Lodgers
This years crowd of calves
Looked at me from behind the wire
With a collective quizzical eye.

They watched with interest
As I ripped the long luscious grass,
Growing on my side of the fence,
Making a stock sided snack.

Each fuzzy furred creature
Pushing through the throng.
But each untidy youngster
Too nervous to want the front row
Within reach of my uncluttered left hand.

Finally, what seemed to be
The smallest of the group.
Teetered on trembling legs,
Neck stretched and long pointed pink tongue curling,
Nostrils steaming, streamed, dribbling.
And pulled the chlorophyl green, milk making plant,
Tentatively, tremulously from my expectant grasp,

Victory!

As head jerked up
With trophy showing through cleached jaws,
The others snorted.
Stamped,
Stampeded!

Between the fingers of my left hand
The electric feel of the hair
Covering the boney hump
Where horns would soon sprout.
