To a Townie
Used to seeing blackbird
Growing grey,
And bald sparrow
Filling every minute of the day,
Fox nudging at dustbin bag,
Walking High Street with brush a flag.
Or, cars pricked and sideways gait
At B.R. Southern Region train,
Passing, screeching at commuters rate,
Magpies, like noisy schoolboys,
Squirrels, startles as painted toys,
And starlings that turn the evening sky
To black, as rootwards home they fly.

Then, to see a green edged,
Grey backed, long necked bird,
With bill a butchers knife,
Standing still and tall.
On sentry call,
Underlines the fragility
Of natures way of life.
