When the sun had turned the sky to red
And faces phased out of sight,
When the light blue changed to night time,
When the planets blame star bright,

We crept, in Indian File.
Under orders not to speak,
We tiptoed, and with lowering shoulders,
Heard our bones and sinews creak,

Our progress slow,
Our breath a sigh,
The branches low,
As we crept by,

And making sure our stealthy way
Would not arouse a searching nose,
We kept the rustling westerly wind
On puffing cheeks, now glowing rose.

Slower came each carefull step,
Nearer came the goal,
Sudden came mountainous spoil,
Menacing came the hole.

Like statues fixed,
Turned to stone in mid stride,
We stared at how the dugout home
Had been engineered with pride.

We saw how many feet of claws
Had bared the hard packed tracks
That came and went like spokes of wheel,
The routes to midnight snacks.

We saw their larder, and their kitchen,
Their playground and their seat,
But in this fleeting visit
We did not see Them yet.

I for one was pleased
That Badger stayed concealed,
For if others could catch him cold
His blood would now be congealed.
