Untouchables
Lodgers
Almost hidden by apple trees
At the edge of the seaside route,
A shed, stacked high with boxes
Of vegetables and fruit.

The Saturday morning queue,
Pale faced and yawning wide,
Exhausted from the night of war,
Too frail their gape to hide.

At opening time the closing ranks
Perk up and come alive,
Rustling bats and shopping lists,
Ready for eight twenty five.

Potatoes and greens and carrots,
And turnips for a stew,
One orange, and one banana,
The sight and aroma so new.

And on the way home across Rochester Way
Bren carriers, amphibians, and tanks,
Ground their endless convoy lines
To Dover, with our thanks.
