As an Evacuee in Nineteen Forty, I held very tight to Mums warm hand At Maidenhead, by The Thames so grand, Watched the fish leap as The River tumbled, Saw The Locks with Boats all jumbled, At Boulters Narrow, where Skiffs, like arrow, Jostled for room next to The Boom, With Punts, and Dinghies and River Buses, Where I overheard the cusses and the laughter, Of The Water Men, forever after. When I was nine and still War Time, I wandered along The Calder and Hebble, Called out my greeting in a wavering treble, To the Giant Horses crunching their way, On a twanging wet rope, on a warm Summers Day. With many years gone by and Ancient Man in my eye, The Kennet and Avon, muddy in parts, Where Canoes at Devizes, on staggered starts, Jerk their course to Westminster Bridge, Travel South of the astonishing Wansdyke Ridge: And a wonderful day at Stratford on Avon, A blue Dragonfly and A Cut to sail on. And later in search of The Loch Ness Monster, The skirl of The Pipes and a sweet voiced Songster, Showed me the sight of Neptunes Staircase, Where scenery of such Amazing Grace, Is reflected in the Rising Pound Where Narrow Boats, homeward-bound, Hand painted in their spectacular fashion, Pander to my Extreme of Passion! 20th July 1993.
