Double four seven six seven
came slowly in, tender first,
Eying the windmill guard.
As buffers kissed
The waving arms froze
And brakes locked hard.

Hammering steel,
With acrobat lifting link
To spin a weighted screw.
Inward hiss of vanishing air
Ran the length of coaches six,
Safe guarding this glazed queue.

The Fort reseeded,
Curving beyond the Caledonian,
Lost against the cloud cut range.
Soon, entering prairie land,
Cruising smoothly around the reeds,
Chuffing sound reverberating strange.

Pulling now with head of steam
As gradient finger points up
The clockwork rythmn winds down.
Leaning, climbing over The Viaduct,
Arches flash and boom beneath,
Regulator wide for Glenfinnan Town.

Slower now the passing markers,
Slower the returning pistons,
Faster please, the growing call.
Slower turn the weighted drive wheels,
Slower still the sleepy sleepers,
Faster please, no time to stall.

This leviathan, blowing hard,
Shudders over one in fifty,
Sighs of relief applaud this test.
Easy run by Morags Pool,
Hebrides mysterious grow,
Mallaig for food, and drink, and rest.
