The carpet of diamonds
Glinted,
And scrunched, beneath my feet.
The brown sparrows,
Fat against the cold,
Sat quiet and still in the frosted trees.

The blackbird left his arrow prints
Amongst the scattered jewels
With his stuttering stride,
Head cocked left, then right.
Beak a lever at this frozen store.

Low slung hunter,
Orange,
Day glow bright,
Green coal eyes,
But winter unwise,
Slithers forward,
Coiled steel frame,
And takes aile
At busy bird beneath the hedge.

Snap start brings catastrophe
As razor claws find no grip.
Flailing limbs corkscrew this missile,
Fizzles out, a heap, a hip.
Surface cracks and bunter falls
In drift of diamond flakes,
The flurry of snow a cloud, a mound
That frantic feather rakes.

Crackling. shrieking, warning cry
Brings rushing zig' zag headlong flight,
But soon this terrifying place,
Sun drenched, returns to quiet as night.
